Gripped by the trauma of the Vietnam War, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE draws a distinct line between the liberal, “Hippy” blissful ignorance of the left-leaning element of society and the “Hawk”, hardline “Kill or be killed” attitude of the God-fearing, war-mongering right-wing conservatives. The most impressive aspect of the film is the theme layered into Hooper’s script, co-written with Kim Henkel, that is a vicious commentary about the breakdown of American society.
